Engineering Similarity Analysis of Wire Ropes for Cranes and Ships

Wire ropes, as key flexible components in load-bearing and transmission systems, play a vital role in both land-based lifting equipment (such as port gantry cranes and tower cranes) and marine engineering (such as mooring systems, towing winches, and marine cranes). Although their environmental media, load patterns, and operating frequencies differ, they both adhere to a highly unified set of engineering principles in terms of design basis, mechanical performance requirements, and life-cycle management.

This paper will analyze the key similarities between wire ropes used in cranes and ships from three dimensions: structural mechanics, dynamic performance indicators, and standardized management.

Plastic-Coated Steel Wire Rope (PCSR) is a composite load-bearing component consisting of a bare steel wire rope core coated with a layer of polymer material. PCSR is designed to sacrifice the abrasion and weather resistance of the coating in exchange for superior corrosion resistance, contamination resistance, and noise reduction and cushioning capabilities of the base steel rope. Its applications are increasingly widespread in architectural decoration, fitness equipment, cable control, and specific corrosive environments.

There are significant differences between Galvanized Steel Wire Ropes and ordinary oil ropes (usually refers to steel wire ropes coated with grease on the surface, namely oil wire ropes) in many aspects, including materials, structures, uses, performance characteristics, etc. The following is a detailed analysis of the differences between the two:
